Journalist sustains injuries during anti-SAITM protest march

Thursday, 25 May 2017

A journalist who was covering the protest march against SAITM was admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that the injured journalist was a 56-year-old photographer.

When the troupe of anti-SAITM protesters – comprised of university students and their parents – ignored Police orders and attempted to march towards the Presidential Secretariat Office, the Police had used tear gas and high-pressure water cannons in an effort to disperse the crowd.

Police, on Wednesday afternoon, teargassed a group of protesters, demanding the immediate closure of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM). The protest was led by parents of undergraduates backing the GMOA-led campaign against the private medical college. (Pic by Saman Abesiriwardene)
