Thursday, 21 May 2020

Cabinet co-spokesman Bandula Gunawardena today insisted that he did not mislead anyone with regards to the proposed Homagama cricket stadium.

The Minister also stood his ground on the project saying it will help the people in the area and surrounding areas. The Homagama cricket stadium project has come under attack by former cricketers and others.

Former cricketers Arjuna Ranatunga, Roshan Mahanama and Mahela Jayawardena. Gunawardena had been quoted this week as saying the project will be funded by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC had however denied the claims.

Former Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila had echoed the statement made by Gunawardena but later withdrew his comment saying he was misled by the information provided by Gunawardena.

Asked about it at the post cabinet media conference today, Gunawardena insisted he had not misled anyone. He said that former Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila has a right to express his opinion. Gunawardena said that he stood by the proposed cricket stadium project and had done his part by securing the land for it.

He reiterated that the Government will not be funding the project and that it will be handled by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. Gunawardena also said that construction of the stadium will not commence immediately. He said that 126 acres of land has been allocated for the project at Diyagama in Homagama.
