The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) today, made known its intention to pursue appropriate action against recent vitriolic and scurrilous attacks on individual judges by the electronic and print media. BASL president Geoffrey Alagaratnam, PC said this at the ceremonial sitting to welcome the new Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Sithambarampillai Thurairaja PC today.

“In this connection the Bar is also concerned, at recent vitriolic and scurrilous attacks on individual judges by the electronic and print media. The Bar will pursue appropriate action for these irresponsible attacks, which affect the independence, integrity and reputation of the judiciary, amounting to an undermining of this institution vital for democracy,” the BASL president said.

He said it was members of the judiciary who did not have a public voice who were subject to such ridicule.

“It is also disturbing, that the media, which should be in the forefront of protecting democracy, should resort to such measures, where the members of the judiciary, who cannot be expected to have a public voice, are subject to such ridicule, instead of resort to available civilized mechanisms for impugning the conduct or fitness of a judge if such be actually the case,” he further added.
