In response to a question raised by me in Parliament, State Minister of Public Administration made a misleading statement in Parliament. He said that when he inquired from the Immigration Emigration Controller whether a diplomatic passport holder was taken into custody in Dubai, the Controller said that he had not received information about such an incident. In fact, there is no mechanism to inform the Controller about arrest of diplomatic passport holders. Hence, it is natural for him to be in the dark. MP Udaya Gammanpila said.
Our embassy in UAE should write to the UAE government requesting the list of names of Sri Lankans arrested by the Police and also whether there is a diplomatic passport holder in custody. Some government MPs alleged that the diplomatic passport holder was a Pradeshiya Sabha member of the SLPP. Another alleged that he was a Provincial Councilor of the UPFA. Unfortunately, these MPs do not know that Pradeshiya Sabha members and provincial councilors are not entitled for a diplomatic passport.
The State Minister further alleged that the story of the diplomatic passport holder is cooked up by the Opposition to sling mud at the Government. It is not a story made by us. It was first reported in Khaleej Times of 6th February, which is the newspaper with the highest circulation, in Dubai.
