Country to get three more WHO approved COVID vaccines – State Minister

Sri Lanka will receive three vaccines approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for Emergency Use within the next two weeks, Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Dr. Channa Jayasumana stated yesterday (27).The World Health Organization yesterday approved the grant of one million doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to Sri Lanka under its COVAX facility. Dr. Jayasumana pointed out that the said three types of vaccines which have not been used in Sri Lanka before will be available in Sri Lanka within the next two weeks.Jayasumana also said that the said three types of vaccines are being manufactured in the United States and China. Jayasumana made these observations speaking at a media briefing in Anuradhapura yesterday (27).The State Minister said that by the second week of July, 20 million Sinopharm vaccines will be available in Sri Lanka and at least the first dose will be given to all those over 60 years in the country.

Jayasumana added that it is imperative that everyone act in accordance with the health quarantine laws, especially with regard to young children and those who have not yet been vaccinated, as there is no guarantee that the corona vaccine will be 100 percent safe. Jayasumana also observed that the Sinovac vaccine will be manufactured in Sri Lanka and initial steps are ongoing in the Kundasale area in Kandy.
