More than 800,000 domestic gas cylinders are expected to be released to the market within this week, says Litro Gas Lanka Ltd.
Litro Gas Lanka Director (Sales and Marketing and Corporate Affairs) Janaka Pathirathna said the company has already released over 700,000 domestic gas cylinders to the market within the past seven days. He explained that the recent adverse weather, the shortage of kerosene oil and their trading competitor not having adequate stocks of LP Gas cylinders resulted in the increasing demand for domestic LP Gas.
“At present, we are supplying more than 25 per cent of the daily requirement of domestic LP Gas to the market,” Pathirathna added.
He said that a ship carrying LP Gas reached the Thaldiyawatte buoy yesterday and the unloading of gas has already started.
A company official said the supply operations will be strengthened and dealers will be able to maintain a stock of LP Gas cylinders at any given time within the next six days. Sources in the energy sector say that Litro Gas requires a stock of around 150,000 gas cylinders to keep their supplies running smoothly.
Queues were seen at both Litro and Laugfs LP Gas outlets in recent weeks due to a supply crunch. Any stocks that were released to the market were quickly snapped up by customers, leading to an apparent shortage. The Government has urged both companies to augment their stocks in view of the festive season.
