Basil: New party will be a reality

Friday, 30 September 2016

UPFA strongman and former Minister Basil Rajapaksa yesterday said that the new political party in the offing would soon become a reality and masses from grassroots level different areas would converge at Ratnapura on October 8 to fire the first salvo.Basil, the younger brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, speaking to journalists at the latter’s political office said: “The more the government burdens the masses with all kinds of taxes and take repressive measures against the people, the more urgent the need for a new political party will become.”

He said one thing was certain. “I will not be the leader of the new political party and that is for sure,”

“The government is protecting racketeers and the new party will do everything possible to topple it”, the former Minister said.

Asked whether the new political party would be a challenge to the Joint Opposition, Rajapaksa answered in the negative. He said the Joint Opposition was represented by parliamentarians of different political parties believing in the same ideologies.

Asked whether the new political party he was talking about would see the light of day before the next budget proposals were presented in Parliament , the former Economic Development Minister said he couldn’t comment.

Rajapaksa said that SLFP loyalists who had hitherto been in hibernation and those from other parties who were disgruntled with the incumbent government would join the new party in large numbers and it would not only be a political party but an alliance and a national force.

The Hambantota District Parliamentarian said the government was not media friendly unlike its predecessor.

“When Mahinda Rajapaksa was President, he had meetings with media heads at Temple Trees regularly and never told them what to do, but at present the government is controlling the media as never before.”
