Sharing the limelight with the Sri Lankan Airlines RTC Magic Million is the Thambiayah Memorial Million. It is a race that has been framed to honour the memory of Shivantha Thambiayah who was the Chairman and Managing Director of the Cargo BoatDispatch Company Ltd, one of the oldest Shipping Companies in the country dating back to 1866.
He had a passion for horses and racing that came to him from his father Alfred Thambiayah who raced in the days when Sri Lankan racing was in it’s prime with Racecourses in Colombo, Galle and Nuwara Eliya. He had a super string of horses who won the biggest races on the Sri Lankan turf. The race is sponsored by Mr. Dhiren Nirmalingam in memory of his uncle the late Shivantha Thambiayah.
The Royal Turf Club in Nuwara Eliya will be flying high as Sri Lanka celebrates New Year on last week end. Not just because of the fact that the Racecourse is located at a height of over 6000 Feet, but because Sri Lankan Airlines – The National Carrier has put it’s weight behind promoting the cause of Horse Racing in the Emerald Isle. They have stepped in to sponsor THE SRI LANKAN AIRLINES RTC MAGIC MILLION – The feature event of the day and the piece de resistance of the Season. So the Airline that connects Sri Lanka to the world is all set to make it’s debut on a Turf that is home to one of the largest spectator sports in the World – Horse Racing.
Dadigama Jewelers will add glitter to what promises to be the richest day ever in the history of the Royal Turf Club and they too will be one of the Celebrity Sponsors of the day.
The Turf Accountant Firms – Sporting Star and Sporting Times will also be making their presence felt on this third and auspicious Sunday of the Month by sponsoring two races on the card that day. Both Companies have a long and historical relationship with Horseracing and it will be like a homecoming to see them at the Royal Turf Club.
Add to that the entertainment and party like atmosphere which promise to make the morning of Sunday 15th April a day that you just cannot afford to miss. A Total of 6 races have been framed for the 15th April Race Day with 2 Million races to be held signature Race RTC Magic Million sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines and the Shivantha Thambiayah Million.
Both the Millions are going to be exciting to witness in SRILANKAN AIRLINES RTC MAGIC MILLION inform horse Alcazaba will be facing a stiff challenge from Mehran who went a brilliant Mock Race on the 1st April and Aventus who has been working well in the Morning Trials.
SHIVANTHA THAMBIAYAH MEMORIAL sponsored by Mr.Dhiren Nirmalingam would be a very open race with Roswald having the edge over others and 1st April Class 1 & 2 winner Santos might come close if he produces the same style of victory as he did last time.
A total of 46 Runners will be taking part in the 6 races framed highest number of runners on one race day at RTC.
And a whopping stakes of close to 2.5 million would be given out on the 15th April Race day highest stakes ever paid in the history of RTC and SRILANKAN racing.
Amongst the visiting foreign jockeys not only see Indian Jockeys like Irvan Singh, A vishwanath but a Frenchman Jockey Charles Perkins would be making his presence felt at Royal Turf Club Nuwara Eliya which comes with a good record of winners in France and Hong Kong racing Circuit.
