Sri Lanka’s elephants: Tradition versus animal rights

Elephants are at the centre of a dilemma in Sri Lanka between centuries-old tradition and a growing awareness of animal rights. More than 30 illegally kept elephants have been confiscated by wildlife officers in the past two years. But now there are concerns there soon won’t be enough pachyderms to perform at sacred events.
