Demonstrators led by the Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran did not damage public property unlike some southern mobs, engaged in destroying places of worship belonging to religious minorities, Health Minister and Co- Cabinet Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said on Wednesday.Fielding questions during the Cabinet press briefing at the Information Department, Senaratne said that one had to differentiate between racially motivated attacks backed by power hungry groups and people demonstrating against what they believed were grievances that had not been addressed.

A shop, he noted had been burnt in Maharagama on Tuesday, but the police were yet to make any arrests, despite the availability of CCTV evidence.

“I spoke to the Police Officer in charge of the area in which the arson attack had occurred and urged him to apply the law,” the Minister said, adding that he had received a positive response.

On the instructions of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera sent a Memorandum to all Officers in Charge of Police Stations recently, stating that they would be held responsible, if immediate action was not taken to quell rabble-rousers trying to incite communal clashes.
