Hon. (Dr.) Anil Jayantha Fernando, Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning of Sri Lanka, emphasized the importance of living wages as a key instrument for reducing inequality, fostering more inclusive economic growth, and supporting sustainable development during discussions at the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva. Addressing delegates, the Minister noted that ensuring workers receive wages that enable a decent standard of living contributes not only to social protection but also to increased productivity, economic resilience, and long-term national development. Dr. Fernando also highlighted Sri Lanka’s participation in the Global Coalition for Social Justice, an initiative of the International Labour Organization (ILO) that brings together governments, employers, workers’ organizations, and international partners to promote decent work, social inclusion, and equitable economic opportunities. He reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing policies that strengthen social dialogue, protect workers’ rights, and create a more inclusive labour market. The International Labour Conference, the ILO’s annual forum, brings together representatives of governments, employers, and workers from around the world to discuss and shape international labour standards and policies that promote decent work and social justice..
