Govt to set up 2.2 m home gardens countrywide

The Government will set up 2.2 million home gardens countrywide early next month under the program “For a green Country”. It will cover all Grama Nildhari divisions in the island. Almost 12,912 low income Samurdhi families are now entrusted with free quality fruit and vegetable plants to set up nurseries to grow the plants, said the State Minister of Samurdhi, Household Economy, Micro Finance, Self-Employment and Business Development, Shehan Semasinghe.

The State Minister said Rs. 401 million would be invested onthe food growing project on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

He said seed varieties for the nurseries were obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture. Chillies, tomatoes, brinjals, turmeric, ginger, snake gourd, and bitter gourd plants would be provided to selected farmer families to grow more food to meet the future needs of fruits and vegetables in the country.
