Cycling as a solution to fuel crisis

The Ministry of Transport has taken steps to popularise cycling as a solution to the transport issue caused by the fuel crisis.

The Ministry of Transport hopes to popularise cycling for schoolchildren in areas outside the city, and to encourage commuters arriving in Colombo by train to reach the nearest railway station by bicycle and park it safely at the railway station. It is also planned to introduce new cycle lanes soon.

Minister of Mass Media, Transport and Highways Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said that the police and the Institution of Engineers of Sri Lanka and other agencies involved in cycling will work together for this purpose. Leasing companies have also taken steps to provide leasing facilities for bicycles.
