The two members of the Kandy Municipal Council, who were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on charges of soliciting a bribe of Rs.150,000, were ordered to be remanded till January 19 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohommed Mihail today.
The Bribery Commission informed the Court that the two suspects have solicited a bribe of Rs.150,000 from the complainant to expedite the rest of the administrative work through the officers of the Municipal Council with regard to the fixing of digital sign boards close to the Katugastota Bridge.
The complainant has received the approval of the Municipal Council to fix a digital sign board nearby Katugastota Bridge.
When the case was taken up before the Court, the two suspects were produced.
However, the Magistrate had warned the prison officials for producing the two suspects before open Court without the permission of the Court in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On a complaint received from a resident of the Kandy area, Bribery Commission officers had arrested two members of the Kandy Municipal Council on January 5 at the car park of a private hospital for allegedly accepting a Rs.150,000 bribe.
